Recorded April 2019

April 7, 2019, In 1918, Roseau County had many young people involved with World War I, and many casualties. It’s hard to imagine the anxiety of parents in those days when you had to wait weeks sometimes to get a letter to or from your service member knowing they could be in dangerous places.

Besides that worry, there were regulations that affected people on the home front, too.

April 14, 2019 Stories of Ross pioneers. Among the early settlers in Ross community was Florenz Lins, coming in 1886 with J. W. Durham; and Edward Erickson, who came with his folks in 1889; John Krog, 1890, and Lars Odegaard, 1895. An interview was given E. V. Chapin by Mr. Lins, which is as follows:

Mr. Lins came to what is now Roseau County in 1886 with George Davis, driving a team and following Indian trails. George Davis homesteaded here and later served as county commissioner, defeating Mr. Skagen. Mr. Lins moved from southern Minnesota to North Dakota and then to Roseau County.

April 21, 2019 As I was reading through some newspapers at the Roseau County Museum, I noticed this human interest story in a Roseau Times-Region from 1955.

Mrs. Martha Kaasa, who has passed her 90th birthday, doesn’t let little things like needles trouble her. In fact, until a recent five-generation celebration in Roseau, she had one buried in her leg for over 72 years!

Mrs. Kaasa, who spent two months here this summer visiting her daughters, Mrs. F. W. Reichelt and Mrs. Harry Nelson, is a native of Rochester where the original needle incident happened.

This photo came from the Pinecreek Ladies Aid history books. It shows from left, Delphine Reichelt Lislegard, daughter Linda Lislegard Schmidt, Regina Kaasa Reichelt, and Mrs. Martha Kaasa.

April 28, 2019 The bowling alley in Roseau was owned by Clarence and Marveline Stites during my childhood. Since they were usually referred to as Ma and Pa Stites, I thought their story might be a good one to read leading up to Mother’s Day. Jean Pederson submitted this story to the Roseau County Heritage book published by the Roseau County Historical Society in 1992.

Thank you to for letting us share the history of our county with your listeners.
