Museum Book Collection

February 11, 2020 by Roseau County Historical Society

After completing an inventory of books and magazines it was obvious that a significant amount of books had accumulated over the past 92 years. The Collection Committee working with Britt, RCHS Director, determined that we needed to revisit the collection policy and look at decreasing the number of books in our collection. Although not an easy decision it was a process that needed to be done as we look toward the future and storage availability.
Over a year the committee meticulously combed through the books and magazines in the collection. After their initial finds, Britt also went through the books to confirm the findings.
We will now start the process of deaccessioning (to sell or otherwise dispose of an item in a collection), the selected books from the collection.

Sample of deaccessioned books

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
1. This is not a process taken lightly.
Considerable time and care have been taken throughout this entire process.

2. The museum will never just get rid of items once it has been accepted into the collection.
We value every donation given to the museum. So don’t hesitate to “spring clean” and bring your items to the museum.

3. This is a unique situation.
With a complete inventory of books and magazines we now have complete records of the items in the collection. We can now assess what we have multiples of, etc.

How did we determine this action? For example, We have 50 copies of Woman’s World magazine for many years. Yes, this is a great collection in good condition and represents a period of history and the different eras. However, they don’t contain Roseau County history and how would we ever use this many “Woman’s World” magazines? The decision was made to select a sample of the magazines that represent different eras versus just discarding the magazines. Another example is school readers, a good sampling is all that’s needed, not 45.
That brings us to the next step. The books and magazines that do not have a catalog number and no traceable roots will be given away. With the numbered books and magazines, we created a list of donors and are making known our need to deaccession some books.
The Roseau County Historical Society/Museum wants to be upfront and transparent through this unique situation. We again want to be clear we will not just dispose of your donated items. If for some odd reason this should happen again, we will again try to reach out to see if the item is wanted back by the donor. As mentioned before the inventory will help us control our duplicate items.
On the following page, you will find a list of Book Donors. If you are interested in having the deaccessioned books returned to you please let us know. We realize that some of the names on the list are no longer with us, but if there is a family member that is interested in the books we can arrange that also. We will not ship the books, donors will have to pick up from the museum. We will keep these books in our possession until April 30, 2020. After that date, we will begin giving away the books.
