Last week I read from a 1954 Roseau Times-Region article telling about the Cloverleafs Hockey Team members. I’ll read the rest of their stories today.

Bud Drown, hockey player

Bud Drown: Bud is back and his long stick still has the poke check built into it. Last year he saved a lot of goals in his defense position and he’s out this year to better his record. ‘Tis said he can squat on the ice and sweep half the surface but it only looks that way when the pucks disappear off the sticks of goal-bound invaders of his defense domain. Bud has been on the Cloverleafs for more seasons than we’ve written about them and the line-up would look bare indeed without him! Snake ’em out Bud!

James Oslund: Jimmy, who recently returned from service, is a former high school player and a new addition to the Cloverleafs. He’s not had too much of a workout so far this season, but what he has had, shows him up to be a promising addition. He’s fast, in condition and has a lot of determination and aggressiveness that will show up to good advantage when the Cloverleafs get their organization going and complete. Jimmy is tall and not light and we’ll bet fans will be cheering for him before the season is too far along.

Lalyn Monsrud: Lalyn was a stalwart on the high school team last year and was one of the reasons why Roseau went to the state. He’s a “never-say-die” wingman who will never give up nor let down. He’s full of drive and will fit into the Cloverleaf line-up to fine style this winter. Fans will like his aggressiveness and will be pleased with the progress he is certain to show before the Cloverleafs lay their sticks down for another year. He’s always in condition and we believe that the Cloverleafs, being primarily a young team, will eventually have the say when games demand the most from each player.

Monty Markstrom: Fans have been cheering Monty for a long time and will go cheering even harder this season. Monty is a human dynamo of energy and speed that makes other leaguers wonder what turned him loose. He’s a goal maker and a back-checker who’ll never give up in the corners and don’t care how big they are. Monty is the “other part” of the Pony Line that spelled the difference between victory and defeat many times last season when the Leafs walked off with the league playoffs. Let ‘er go, Monty, we’re 100 per cent behind you!

Ray Baumgartner: Ray, dynamite partner on the Pony Line, is as hard to shake as the seven-year-itch and as aggressive as a bull moose on the prod. Ray can rack ‘em up with the best of them and play buzz saw on skates while doing it. We watched him drive like a howitzer bullet last winter and we can look forward to seeing him with jet propulsion this year as the Leafs get organized and begin to roll. When the clock begins to roll, Ray is the same way. When goals are made, he’s never far away. Open the gate and move aside, boys, here he comes.

Jack Isaacson: Jack was a hot man on the Pony Line last year and has turned out for the home games in exhibition so far this season. He’s a smart stick handler and a boy who is in the right place at the right time. He is studying for a degree in engineering now and may only be out for the home games. We know Jack’s ability and feel free in saying that fans appreciate the lift he gives the Leafs. We hope to see a lot of you this winter, Jack … and know the team will gain goals and assists off that crafty stick.

Don Collins: Don has made Roseau and league rafters raise with his spectacular saves in the Roseau nets last year and hasn’t lost a bit of his agility and ability. Don can scoop them off the ice with the practiced eye of a catch or blast them aside with a catlike sweep on the ice that leaves the fans wondering how he did it. He’s a tall by with remarkable hands and a goal-keeping ability that places him among the “tops” anywhere. Let ‘em come in threes, twos or all alone past the defense, Don will be sure to beat more than his share of attempts to rack up counters in the Leaf’s net. Don’t let the grin fool you, he’s a terror in the nets!

“This here feller” is Don Willey, 1953-54 manager of the Cloverleafs who replaces Cap Nelson who retired last season. Don will handle the managerial reins of the Cloverleafs and we feel that he can look forward to a good season. The Leafs are shaping up better every game, and with the showing they have made so far, we know there will be a goodly share of terrific games ahead.

We have a good spare goalie this year in the person of Palmer Norberg, last year’s high school goalie, who is right in there with the best of them. He’s given the Cloverleafs a hard time at workouts, and should we ever have to depend on him, we can rest assured he won’t let us down even in the rugged competition of the Northwest Hockey League! We feel a lot safer with a goalie like Palmer around to take care of any minor or major emergency!

That was the end of the article about the 1954 Cloverleafs hockey team members.
