Roseau County Museum Receives Large Grant

Preserving the past for the future

The Roseau County Museum is in the business of keeping the history along with sharing the history and bringing it to life through stories, exhibits, and programs. We do this to keep history alive and hope it sparks your interest in local history.

2020 is looking to be a big year for the museum. The museum was recently granted funds through a Minnesota Historical and Cultural Heritage Grant ($146,099) for a lighting project within the museum. What does this mean? It means that the museum will be updating all the lighting fixtures within the gallery, research room, and storage areas. In 2018, we hired a professional lighting consultant/designer to look at our lighting and come up with a long term solution for our organization. All lighting will be retrofitted to LED bulbs within the storage areas. The research room and gallery are getting a complete redesign. We are thrilled, to say the least, about being able to provide adequate lighting for patrons in the gallery, preserving the artifacts on display, and saving energy. The LED lighting will prevent unnecessary damage to artifacts by filtering out ultraviolet and infrared rays.

Museum Footprint: Lighting will be replaced in each room and all exhibit cases.

The lighting project is scheduled to begin early this spring. The museum will remain open for research, but the gallery will be closed while the electricians are working on that lighting. This is for safety reasons. All the exhibits will be moved and dismantled. We will have updates on our website and Facebook.

We will be looking for volunteers to help move the cases before, during and after the project. If you can help please let us know. The more hands the better.

We are also looking for exhibit ideas. What would you like to see in the museum? There are a few exhibits that will remain and be updated, but the majority will be replaced. If you have any suggestions please let us know.

The exhibit redesign will come at a cost with the printing of new information posters and pictures. This year’s fund drive donations will help offset the cost of creating the new exhibits.

This project has been financed in part with funds provided by the State of Minnesota from the Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund through the Minnesota Historical Society.
