FROM THE SKIPPER
In 1951 and for some years prior to 1951, Laketrails Base Camp was one of my dreams – a very awake daytime
dream – for the future. Jerry Noesen and Ed Herold became a part of this dream and together in 1952, with the authorization of Bishop Francis J. Schenk, we founded and began to develop our dream on Oak Island in Lake of the Woods. This was a dream that included our love for God, teenagers, the wilderness, and the Lake.
We founded and developed Laketrails on the conviction that young people could grow in faith, happiness, self-esteem, knowledge, and skills in this nourishing mixture of God, grace, an accepting and affirming community, and the beauty and challenge of the Lake of the Woods wilderness. After forty years, we are convinced that the dream and the convictions are valid.
We are grateful to Jack Conway for documenting well the development of Laketrails, laughing, loving, learning, and living. He has brought together our place, our people, our program, and our past.
