Preface
Hazel H. Wahlberg
Compiling the data and writing the history of Roseau County has indeed been a satisfying experience for the author. It is intended that the history be as complete as possible with the information available, from prehistory of the area through the present day.
A history book is an impassive recitation of experience until we relate it to ourselves with sensitive awareness. It answers the question in part at least of why we are here, and what conditions we find ourselves in, and what has created the situation. To the young this book may be considered “a book about olden days and my ancestors”; for all parents it will hopefully evoke appreciation for the ideals and dreams, the heartaches, and labors, as well as the joys and satisfactions of those who have gone before us courageously to settle our county. But for the older folks it is a book of remembrance, summoning back to life the early years in which many who read it have played their gallant part and made their enduring contributions. However, it is to the very young in the county that I lay charge to perpetuate the history of our county so that the records may bear out the physical, spiritual, and patriotic zeal in their day and so forward, as it began with our pioneers. I dedicate the book then to all youth, and especially to my grandchildren, Anthony, Melanie, and April Fichter, and to Susan, Sally, and Sarah Wahlberg, and in this spirit:
